British Airborne for Primasole  Reply with quote

I have finished the British paratroop brigade (reduced in strength) needed for Jake’s Primasole scenario from In the Clutches of Eagles. Figures are from the ESCI British paratroops, supplemented by the Airfix generic paratroop set.

There are a couple of HäT Industrie officers from the WWII British Mortars set. Except for HäT, all the figures are scrounged from various collections that were either kicking around since 1970 or were given to me by generous friends who don’t do 20mm.

Now all I need is to find a 6’ x 8’ table and 4-6 people willing to play 14 turns – and a 305L17 coastal mortar! (Anyone have a picture of one of these?)

The 1st Battalion mortar stand. The mortar tube is from the Airfix Paratroopers set, but the legs are my own creation. Manned by ESCI and Airfix figures.

The stand on the right is the brigade command. The officer chap with the maroon beret is from HäT. The officer in the stand on the left is the spotter for the HMS Newfoundland, also from HäT.

The ATG (6pdr) with command infantry stand. Gun was scratch-built back when the Airfix Bren Carrier set seemed to be OOP and nearly impossible to find.

A reduced-strength battalion with command stand and two companies each of an infantry command stand and infantry stand. Officer is ESCI; radioman is Airfix.

The whole brigade -- or what’s left of it after the airdrop. There are two extra stands (not in the scenario OOB) that I made from available figures: LMG stands with prone and standing Bren gunner on each.

But is this the Airborne carriage (Mark 3)?

Nice pics.

Daniel, what are your bases size?
They seem very close to mine (35mm or a bit less than 1.5").

No, the 6 - pdr is not the airborne version. It is the "pieces of old Atlantic guns and random bits of plastic made into an approximation" version. Post a picture of the airborne version and I'll take a whack at making one. Smile

My bases are about 27mm deep by 30mm wide, so a little smaller than what you describe. As you can see, I put three figures on these bases for infantry, and two or three for HIW and LMG and weapons stands. LMG and weapons bases are 30mm deep and 27mm wide.

Command stands are smaller, with two figures. Artillery stands tend to be bigger.

Bob,

Thanks for the photos. I am guessing that the main changes for the 6pdr are folding trails and the removal of the front partial shield.

The Obice will tak a scratch-build, I am sure!

Nice to see Paras in KD.

Does anyone know if this was how they actually dressed in Sicily? I know from When Dragons Flew that the Airlanding troops were ordered to leave their Denisons behind and helmets were only to be worn for landing. I have not seen anything for the Parachute Brigade, would make life a lot easier if they did wear the Denison or may just go for it anyway.

How much narrower, would it be noticeable at scale?

Very noticable, a pair of Airfix guns with the mods done to the shield and axle.
