War breaks out between Russia and China. Both sides violate Mongolian neutrality. Russian VDV forces seize the bridge over the Khalkhin-Gol River, ahead of the lead elements of the 21st Group Army. The 21st Motor Rifle Division rushed to reinforce the paras but the Chinese get there first
Map - Order of Battle - Roster
Russian Deployment
The reinforced 2nd Battalion 108th Guards Airborne Div is deployed in the indicated zone. All stands are dug in - including the vehicles. +3 cover for personnel and +2 for vehicles
The vehicles of the 1040th SAM Regiment must be deployed within 20cm of the bridge X, but not in the gully. They are not dug-in but are very well camouflaged and count in cover for spotting purposes (netting is thermal masking so this counts vs. TI). As soon as they fire the cover is removed
The elements of 185th Tank Regiment are reinforcements, arriving turns 4 to 7 (see OB). They enter between points F & E
Chinese Deployment
The 1st Battalion 12th Armoured Brigade starts on table, deployed in the zone indicated
The 4th Battalion 12th Armoured Brigade enters the table on turn 1 deployed up to 12cm either side of road D
The Elements 21st Group Army Air Defence Bde enter table on turn 3 down road C in convoy. Each stand entering after the first loses 3cm move for each stand that went before
The 2nd Battalion 184th Special Operations Bde enter the table on turn 4 between points A & B. They may enter down the gully
Terrain
The table is 3ft x 4ft if playing 1cm = 50m
The open ground is undulating grassland bereft of cover
The red lines are roads
The blue lines are rivers. Tracked vehicles and personnel can cross but take 2xBMA to do so. It is impassable to wheeled vehicles
The brown dotted lines are ridgelines which for the most part break LOS and give hull down position to vehicles touching them vs all fire that crosses the ridge. The darker. thicker dotted lines indicate ridges that are higher than the others. If touching a dark brown ridge the lighter ridgeline do not block LOS or provide hull down positions
The grey square is a wooden BUA which gives personal stands (only) within +2 cover
The sandy area is a gully. It takes a BMA for stands to enter or exit the gully. Once within the gully stands may only fire at, or be fired at by, other stands at least touching the edges of the gully. Note the bridge at point X touches the gully
Special Rules
The game lasts 11 turns with a 50% chance of a 12th turn. Roll at the end of the 11th turn
Max visibility is 60cm
The 2nd Battalion 184th Special Operations Bde is delivered by aircraft and chopper. On turn 3 these can be shot at by the SA-8's. This is abstracted. If there are three SA-8's in a fit state to fire roll 1d6, 2 SA-8's 1d10 or 1 SA-8 1d20. Roll for every stand in the 184th (inc off table) ONCE requiring a 6, 10 or 20 respectively to kill the stand. This does not trigger morale checks or delay entry onto the board
At the start of the game roll for the wind direction. Once halted the Chinese smoke generator truck makes a 3x20cm strip of TI and laser opaque smoke directly down wind. The screen can be turned on or off at the end of the orders phase.
Victory Conditions
The Chinese are trying to take bridge X and get their air defence assets around it
To win the Chinese must remove all Russian stands in good morale from within 20cm of the Bridge. If they fail in this the Russians win the game.
If they remove the Russians they must score 5+ points to win. For each air defence, in good morale, asset within 12cm of the bridge X score: HQ-7 2 pts, GPS jammer: 4 pts. If the smoke screen covers the bridge gains another point
Any other result is a draw
Good morale is not demoralised and not shaken
