Welcome to the site! Here are my responses to your statements and questions.

I have a few simple questions about how to understand the TO&E. There are also a few things I need to check.
What are support stands? There are 2 in each Battalion HQ (called a HQ company in the list). Are they single figures? Is this just junk I don't want to represent?
The support stands are not used anymore in Command Decision 4. If you are using CD4, don’t worry about them.

What I need to check:
Recon infantry stands are represented like infantry stands. They are not patrol stands.
Correct, recon infantry are full-size infantry stands that are self-ordering. This is described in game terms as recon infantry in order to reflect the greater initiative and training of these paratroops. Each stand can command itself, so the unit is much more flexible.
quote:
Command stands are single figures.
Correct.
quote:
Command infantry are like infantry stands but include a command figure.
Command infantry are indeed like infantry stands but also have a joint command capacity (within their own company). A command figure is not required on the command infantry stand. Some of us deliberately do
not
use a command figure on command infantry stands in order to limit the intel to the opposing players (“Which of those infantry stands is commanding that enemy company? I don’t know – they all look alike!”)
quote:
The paras have companies composed of
1 command stand
3 recon infantry stands
The airlanding companies are composed of
1 command infantry stand
3 infantry stands
In terms of representing the units (for financial economy), I think that means I just need to buy a bunch of extra command figures and have them available when I want to represent the paras. How do the differences play out on the table top? I have a feeling that the air landing boys pack a far bigger punch than the paras.
If you follow the above advice and do not use command figures on your command infantry stands, then you should not need more command figures; you will only need them for your “pure” command stands, such as the para company command.
All other things being equal, the airlanding companies do have more fire-power than the paras, because they have 4 infantry stands as compared to the paras' 3. However, the command flexibility of the para companies is greater because of the “recon” status of the infantry stands. Each stand can do a completely different action, move in a different direction, etc. as it is self-ordered.
Hope this is helpful.
